Going abroad
Going abroad
In general, all IIS students are obliged to conduct a stay abroad during the course of their studies. However, certain exemptions apply to international students. Please see here for more details.
If you have completed your entire Bachelor degree in a university located in a country where German is not an official language, please find the procedure to follow here.
If you want to be exempted due to unforeseeable circumstances, please carefully read the information provided here. In this case, you can apply for semester abroad exemption via the “IIS Self Service”
Please use the form linked below.

It is recommended to take a semester off during your stay abroad. This semester off is only accepted afterwards if you don’t earn more than 25 ECTS abroad. The whole procedure is explained on the following document from the international relations office.
Basically, there are three options to request a Learning Agreement, depending on the course.
- “General” Learning Agreement for the following modules: Studium Generale, Study Abroad Courses Information Systems, IIS Research Seminar, and IIS Project Seminar. To obtain a Learning Agreement for those courses, please go to the “IIS Self-service”.
Please use the form linked below.

- Learning Agreements for all the other courses need to be directed towards the responsible chair.
Please have a look here for more information.
You can find more information about “going abroad” here. Please read this information carefully.
Please note that the planning of the semester abroad must be initiated some time in advance. Already in the first semester you should start planning if you intend to study abroad in the 3rd or 4th semester. You can find more information about this on the website of the International Office of WiSo as well as on the section of going abroad with the department of informatics.
Have a look on the website of the FAU to find information about scholarships.
If you have problems before or during your stay abroad please contact the IIS going abroad coordinator.
